1. Bach, J.S. Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 in D (BWV 1050). Overture in D (BWV 1069). The English Concert. Trevor Pinnock, conductor. Archiv 2533440 (c1980). 1st Label. Disq Playing Grade 95/95. Disq Visual Grade 95/95. Inner Sleeve 95. Album 95. $25.00. Recorded in Henry Wood Hall, London on November 1 and 2 , 1979. I came to this record first because it was recorded in Henry Wood Hall, a venue Mary Morris Lawrence was instrumental in establishing. Then on listening, I found that this is subtly effective phonography. These slightly mannered performances are off set by their natural setting and detailed perspective. (Harold Lawrence' s copy of this production was one of my favorite discoveries in his collection. More of my Harold Lawrence favorites can be found in Journal of Recorded Music Eleven.) ****

Disq Visual Grade 95/95. Cover 95. $100.00. With just guitar and voice Fred McDowell can rival the color of the thirties Ellington Band. Recorded in Como Mississippi in February 1964 with one Copps condenser microphone. (I remember Chris coming to Campus Records in the mid-Sixties and talking about a great blues singer he had recorded. I didn't understand the significance of that discovery until recently, when listening to this record.) *****(*)
